Sashiko!

Hello, Kon'nichiwa! Its been so long (4 years to be exact) since my last entry and any kind of motion really for Bit of Denim. I went through a phase of not wanting to do this anymore to completely stopping but God always brings me back to this medium. I'm happy to be creating again and Im very excited to share what Ive been workign on!

Okay so boom! For the past 5-6 months I've been studying and practicing Sashiko, a traditional Japanese stitching technique used for mending, reinforcing and decorating fabrics. It started back in 1603 and was mostly used to strengthen clothing and extend the lifespan of garments. The purpose of Sashiko is so similar to the story behind Bit of Denim so I thought it would be really dope to incorporate this into my brand. Also, I am absolutely OBSESSED with Japanese culture. So why wouldn't I take a stab at this?!  I took a few online courses though this amazing site called Domestika, bought books and watched so many Youtube videos. The stitching process in it self is not difficult its just very time consuming and meticulous. For someone like me who is a perfectionist, I LOVE IT. Its so satisfying seeing the little stitches make shape and come together ahhhhh!!!

So I was super geeked to flex my new skill on a custom order for denim coasters. This was my first time making coasters but it was a breeze. Researching the patterns I wanted to use on each patch was so fun (some were challenging) but that makes the process even more rewarding. I am so happy with the outcome! My coworker, Brittany loved them. It was a win win. I look forward to doing more Sashiko for Bit of Denim. I have so many ideas and I plan on getting them all out.
